Captain Marvel, Protector of the Universe (IX): El Capitán Marvel de Arnold Drake & Don Heck (Captain Marvel 5-7)

We begin this issue in a trial. Yon-Rogg has accused him of being a traitor, an "antikree" and don't follow his instructions (they are referring to the previous adventure where he faced Namor and where he should have released a bacteria in the vicinity of New York to observ the resources of humanity against a bacteriological attack). Ronan the Accuser is judging (in a kind of video conference, kree skype), and he decides not to consider him a traitor at least for this time because of his impeccable military record. Ronan also talks about the porter, Mar-Vell manages to convince him of erase his memory instead of killing him (the porter).

At that very moment a submarine from any country behind the iron curtain leaves a creature called "The Metazoid", who is a man convicted of anti-state activities but who manages to save his life in exchange for undergoing an experiment (which should give him the ability to survive on any planet but also gives him the appearance of a monster) and a mission: to capture the leading expert on U.S. missile, Dr. Walter Lawson.

In the Cape, Carol Danvers is asking questions about Lawson, she believes that he is hiding something. Shortly after Mar-Vell/Lawson goes to hospital to erase the memory of the porter, but he is not alone, the Metazoid follows him. Shortly after he tries to capture him, but Lawson escaped and returned as Captain Marvel, and the battle began. We can see that Metazoid is not evil because in the course of the battle he saved Mar-Vell's life. In the end, Mar-Vell recalls the resemblance between this creature and a man-thing, from galaxy's Vintar 7 and attacks him with x-rays, to which is vulnerable because of his unstable cellular structure, killing the creature.

We begin this issue with Marvel fighting a strange monster but we soon discover that Mar-Vell is in the Kree ship training in a kind of virtual reality (which Yon-Rogg up the danger to see if it ends with Mar- Vell's life, but the Captain manages to overcome his enemies). On Earth, Mar-Vell as Walter walks quietly when he almost gets hit by Carol Danvers, who saw a strange aircraft landing (which we know it is the kree ship, that is there for some repairs). Mar-Vell/Lawson does its best to convince Carol that she has not seen anything. The following day, at the Cape, it is carried out an experiment to get light energy from the sun by putting several reflectors in orbit. Mar-Vell know the risks of such energies (in the Kree Empire he faced several creatures born from this experiments) but he can not do anything about it  (orders from Yon-Rogg). The experiment creates a monster, "Solam", a photo-kinetic being, energy converted into mass. Mar-Vell confronts him and supercharges the monster to destroy it.

The sympathy of Mar-Vell to humanity grows, and therefore he is judged again, this time in the chair of the truth of Ronan (yes, it sounds like a TV show) because he destroyed the Solam creature using his scientific knowledge as Kree, and disobeyed orders he didn't observe the Earth's defenses against this monster. Mar-Vell excuse himself saying that the destruction of the base would have jeopardized his mission as a spy, so Ronan agrees to release him, but he must complete a mission to prove his loyalty to the Kress, release the Z-3 virus in a Earth community. Back to the Kree ship before Mar-Vell is back on Earth, Yon-Rogg observes how Carol Danvers is investigating the sighting of a UFO, and shoots a ray of cosmic energy, but Mar-Vell arrives just in time to disperse the beam (even if the actions of Yon-Rogg gave Carol her powers, we still have to wait a few numbers to she how she gets it, and a few years to see her as Ms. Marvel). Carol tells Mar-Vell about her suspicions about Walter Lawson, so Mar-Vell can read the files about Walter (while Una sees everything and gets jealous), which he  will use soon to copy the fingerprints of the late Lawson.

Moreover, in this issue Mar-Vell is going to fight against Quasimodo, the living computer, who attacks the base to feed himself from the computers. Mar-Vell takes advantage that Quasimodo controls a museum city full of mannequins-robots, so this museum-town is where he releases the virus, so to the eyes of Yon-Rogg he fulfills his mission.
