El origen del planeta de los simios. Rise of the planet of the apes

Andy Serkis interpretando a Cesar

Rise of the planet of the Apes is the prequel of the famous saga of the Planet of the Apes. What at first seem to be something to just make some money taking advantage of the previous success of the old movies, has proven to be one of the best movies of 2011's summer.

The story begins with a young scientist trying to find a cure for Alzheimer (his own father is suffering this disease and losing is his memories). He's running some test with apes, but something goes wrong and one of them goes crazy, so all the test are forbidden. After that he'll find out that the ape did it because she was protecting her baby, Caesar (played by Andy Serkis), who will be the true lead character of the story. The scientist will realize that Caesar was afected by his medicine and it makes him really clever, almost like a human, and this medicine also makes his father recover from Alzheimer.

However, Caesar spends most of his life hidden at home, living in a troublesome position, with the intelligence of humans but with all the disadvantages of being an animal. We see the noble goals of the scientist, but we also see the dark side of men, the pharmaceutical world or how many people treat animals (yeah, humans are fucking bastards). We see the evolution of Caesar and how he becomes the leader of these supersmart apes. Also, I have to stand out that the apes don't use violence against humans, they just want their freedom (they just killed two people, and they almost deserve it).

This movie is a big surprise and probably the best movie of 2011's summer. Definitely, Andy Serkis should win an award, he really does a great performance.

Do not expect to finish the story just before the classic movie (even you see a few details about the previous movies, like the rocket or some images of Charlon Heston), but they leave the movie just in the perfect moment, we can imagine what happens next.

Flashpoint

English version.-

DC's miniseries focused on Flash, and changing the DC universe (again...!). It could be compared to the Age of Apocalypse in the same way, someone changes something in the past and it triggers a series of changes and the world becomes totally different.

SPOILERS AHEAD. Barry Allen never became Flash and his mother is still alive, the Reverse Flash never killed her. Apart from the fact that there is not any Flash and the World is desolate, there is a war between Aquaman and Wonderwoman (Atlanteans vs Amazons), so half of the World is almost destroyed.

Most of the superheroes don't exist in this World, and only a few of them are trying to stop the War (Cyborg and Captain Marvel, while Batman is still only focused in Gotham). When Barry realizes that he no longer has his powers and how everything has changed, tries to ask for help from one the few heroes and friends who still exists in this World: Batman. Although, as you know, the man behind the mask is not Bruce Wayne, Batman is his father, Thomas Wayne.

Well, so we have the typical misunderstanding between heroes, a fight, and so on. At first, Batman doesn't believe him, but soon he will find hope in a world where Bruce is alive. He decides to help him, starting to find a way to make Barry become the Flash again. They try to recreate the accident that gave Barry his powers the first time, but something goes wrong and Barry almost die, but he doesn't give up and the second lighting make him become the Flash, the Fastest man alive. Now they are ready to stop the war and find the Reverse Flash to bring the World back  to the way it was.

In the middle of the battle he finds the Flash Reverse, who make Barry realize that he is the one who changed the world saving his mother's life and not him. Also changing that, he make him become a living paradox, so he doesn't need him anymore to become the Flash and the Flash Reverse in the future, so he can kill whenever he wants, and he tries it, but the other main character of this story, Batman manages to save Barry and kill the Flash Reverse. That's when Barry goes back in time to prevent himself from saving his mother and changing the world, which triggers the "reboot" of the DC Universe (adding the Wildstorm universe and part of Vertigo too).

I think that it works as a Flash story, and it's entertaining and interesting, but it's not enough to have all these crossover comicbooks around this story. I just bought the main series, and maybe I should have bought the Batman's one, but honestly, it's enough with the main one (even it might be interesting to read about the reasons of the war in Aquaman and Wonderwoman series, or about this different Superman). On the other hand, Andy Kubert's art is good, as good as his previous comicbooks, so I can't complain about his art.

To sum up, I think that if we take it as a Flash and Batman's story it works and is quite entertainig. So, Rest in Peace all the characters who died because of the relaunch.

A few months ago a good friend sent me this postcard from Peru. I've never been there, so I almost can't say anything about the place, I'll just say that it's one of this places in the world where I want to go, if you want more information we can read wikipedia's article.

Series TV: Temporada/Season 2011-2012

Y vosotros, ¿Qué series vais a ver?

English version (I'm not going to write again all the links to IMDB or put the videos, so you can find them above in the Spanish version of the post).

In a few days all the new seasons of the american TV series are going to begin (with a few excepcions of summer Series such as Torchwood, True Blood, etc).

I'll continue with How I met your mother, but they should improve the last seasons, I was starting to get bored of it, otherwise I won't finish the season. It comes back the 19th of September. Castle also comes back the 19th. I have to catch up with Raising Hope, but I probably will follow its 2nd season, which returns the 20th of September.

I know that I will watch the 7 th season of Supernatural but I hope this season is better than the 6th (the first half was rather disappointing, but the second half season was better). Although I´m looking forward to the premiere of Season 4th season of Fringe. Both series come back the 23th of September.

In October Bored to Death comes back the 10th, The Walking Dead the 16th (but they'll have a break after the first seven episodes) and Chuck begins the 21st.

The new ones: I'll watch Terra Nova (26th September), Homeland (2nd October), Person of Interest (22th September) and New Girl (with Zooey Deschanel) and in midseason I'll wath Alcatraz. You can watch all the trailers above.

Super 8

Super 8, es lo nuevo de J.J. Abrams.

7.5/10

Super 8, the new movie by J.J. Abrams. In the late 70's, Joe Lamb, after the death of his mother and a life where his father doesn't understand him, he just want to shoot a horror short film with his friends and try to win an award. While they are shooting a scene, they witness a train accident. Nevertheless, they'll soon find out that it wasn't an accident, it was planned. Just after the accident, a series of disappearances and strange events take place in their small town (in Ohio). The appearance of the army only adds more questions about the whole situation. The group of young friends, especially Joe, are the only ones who can save his town.

As everyone who have watched it already know, Super 8 is a tribute to the greatest movies of the 80's such as The Goonies, ET, Jaws, Indiana Jones, etc. The movie is a bit too nostalgic and it burdens the movie, although we can see some things from Abrams.

The performances of the young actors Joel Courtney and Elle Fanning (who have done a great job) are one of the best parts of the movie and they have the best scenes (also the rest of the young group of filmakers). On the other hand, the parent's plot it's a bit unnecesary. In conclusion, Super 8 is a quite entertaining movie that will be enjoyed by the "old" vereterans and also by new generations.

Flash #1-12 USA# Johns, Manapul & Kolins

 7/10

La semana que viene: Flashpoint.

Barry Allen is back, Final Crisis, Flash Rebirth (and the Special of Blackest Night) have finished and he is here to be the main sprinter of DC. Johns, Manapul and Kolins helping in the last issues are the authors.

The Dastardly Death of the Rogues is the first arc (issues 1-6), where after come back to his former life, Barry tries to get used to his "new world and time".  Flash will have to face the Renegades ,  a kind of group of police of the future (25th Century), with similar costumes and powers to his Rogues, who accuse him of a future murder of one of them (Mirror Monarch).  So, in this arc we have time travel, misunderstandings and classic adventures, an entertaining story that brings back Flash in Central City.

Even they have appeared on the previous story, the following two issues, drawn by Kolins, are led by two villains, one by Captain Boomerang (a kind of year one, updating him after the events of Blackest Night) and the other one focused in the Reverse Flash, (another "year one", and updating the character after the events of Flash Rebirth, and leaving him ready for the next arc and Flashpoint).

The last arc is focused on an introduction to Flashpoint. Some weird murders are taking place in Central city, someone is killing people, he/she ages its victims. We also see a "new" sprinter, from a different dimension, called Hot Pursuit. Barry and Bart (Kid Flash) will have to work together, and an important villain will return and start the road to Flashpoint.

These 12 issues give us an entertaining and simple adventures that could have become a good stage, but as we already knew, the relaunch of the DC Universe after Flashpoint leaves this stage with a very short life (I wonder if they knew that they were going to relaunch everything after just 12 issues, I guess so because we saw some promotional pictures of Flashpoint months before, but they also talked about a new series for the Flash Family and I think that We won't see that happening).

Francis Manapul does a great job with his art. Scott Kolins also does a good job, and although each has artist has his own style, there is not a big change between their.
In the new DC Universe, Manapul will draw and also write the adventures of Barry. I know that he is a good artist but I don't know if he is a good writer (actually co-writer with Brian Buccellato) so I won't buy the comicbook until I read some reviews of their work and see if it is worthy.

As I've said before (in Spanish, in the 6th anniversary post), today I begin a new section Lunes de postal ("Monday's postcard), where I'll show every Monday one of my favorite postcards (of the ones I own) and I'll say some details of every postcard (where is it from, etc).

I just came back from New York so I think that the best way to open the section is with a postcard from there: Lunchtime atop a Skyscraper, which is a famous photograph taken by Charles C. Ebbets during the construction of the GE Building.

And now the first post with its English version, let's see how it goes. Well, last Sunday, after the hurricane passed, I hadn't many things to do because almost everything was closed. So I found an open cinema and I watched Fright Night, the remake of the Tom Holland's 1985 vampire movie with the same title. I must say that the 3D it's not worthy, so just watch it in 2D.

The movie tells the same story but it has a few changes that improve the original movie. Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) is a teenager who lives outside Las Vegas (in a suburban area) in the last year of highschool and just got what almost any guy of his age would want, being popular and dating the hottest girl. But not everything goes as good as it look, his (almost former) friend Ed, a friend from his "dark" geek former life keeps asking him for help to investigate with him the disappearance of many people, including one of their best friends. Finally, Ed blackmail Charley and they find out that his friend and his family are gone, but they have left all their stuff there. Then Ed tells Charley all this weird theories about what's happening there, He thinks that Charleys's new neighbor, Jerry (Colin Farrell) is a Vampire and he is to blame for all the strange disappearances (You'll see a joke about Twilight just in this part of the movie). Charley doesn't believe him, but he will begin to believe that something is wrong a weird about Jerry and he will have to protect his mother and his girlfriend from an old criature with long fangs.

The movie has the same ingredients of Tom Holland's original version: teenager boy who lives with his single mother, has a girlfriend and believes that his neighbor is a vampire, begins to watch him all the time, no one believes him and he will have to deal with the vampire and fight him. Also he will have some help from a supposed expert on vampires who turns out to be a bit coward.

I think that this version has intelligent changes. The first one, the location of the story, Las Vegas, a place where it may be quite easy to find people who work at night and sleep during the day, also a place where it's easy to think that people just live there for a while and leave the place without any explanation since "nobody stays in Las Vegas". Also, an important change is on the character of Peter Vicent (David Tennant, the 10th Doctor), now some kind of illusionist of the occult playing a show, Fright Night, in Las Vegas, he still is a bit coward, but in this case, he has some real knowledge and believes in vampires (although this character is not so important in this movie).

Colin Farrell plays a scary and charming vampire, making a great performance. The rest of the cast also do a good job.

In conclusion, this is a worthy remake and for me it improves in some aspcets the original movie. Anyway you'll find an action-horror movie quite entertaining.
Ps. You will see a cameo of the former Jerry (Chris Sarandon) when they are dealing with Jerry in the middle of the road.
