Captain Marvel 17.- ¡Y un niño te conducirá!

Como podíamos atisbar en la última página del número previo Mar-Vell sufre las consecuencias del ataque de Ronan y su esfera de negatrones y justo antes de llegar a la Tierra se ve arrastrado a la Zona Negativa. La Inteligencia Suprema ayuda a Mar-Vell a contactar con un joven terrícola: Rick Jones (quien acababa de dejar de ser compañero del Capitán América y donde vemos una recreación de lo sucedido en 116 del Capitán América, leer el anterior post para más información). En varias páginas nos resumen perfectamente el papel que ha tenido en el Universo Marvel, desde la creación de Hulk y los Vengadores a ser Bucky II. Nos encontramos en un momento clave en la vida de Rick, acaba de dejar al Capitán América y no sabe qué hacer con su vida. Viajará haciendo autostop hasta quedarse en medio de la nada (podemos intuir la influencia de la Inteligencia Suprema) donde verá al ¿Capitán América? que le guiará hasta una antigua base-laboratorio Kree donde se encontrará con las NEGABANDAS!  Una vez puestas Mar-Vell puede comunicarse con él y le convence para que las entrechoque y así Mar-Vell intercambia sus átomos negativos con los positivos de Jones aunque instantes después de volver a la Tierra vemos que alguien estaba siguiendo al joven: Yon-Rogg. Se enfrenta a su enemigo y sufre ataques que deberían haber matado a cualquier otro Kree, pero no al nuevo Mar-Vell, por lo que Yon-Rogg huye.

Roy Thomas pretende dejar claro cuales son los nuevos poderes de Mar-Vell: Los poderes se limitan a los otorgados por las Negabandas, es decir, vuelo y convertir la energía mental en física (a parte del cambio de la Zona Negativa a la “positiva”).

As we could see in the previous issue, Mar-Vell suffers from the attack of negatrons of Ronan before landing on Earth, he is pulled into the Negative Zone. The Supreme Intelligence helps him to contact a young earthling: Rick Jones (who had just stopped being Captain America's partner and where we see a recreation of what happened in Captain America 116, read the previous post of this section for more information) . On several pages, they summarize the role played by Rick in the Marvel Universe, from the creation of the Hulk and the Avengers to finish with his short period of time as Bucky II. We are at a key moment in the life of Rick, he just left Captain America and he doesn't know what to do with his life. Hitchhiking he travels to  the middle of nowhere (we can sense the influence of the Supreme Intelligence) where he will see a kind of Captain America?, a projection that guides him to an ancient Kree base-lab where he will find the NEGABANDS! Once he wears these weird bands Mar-Vell can contact him and convinces him to clash them and Mar-Vell and Rick exchange their place, Mar-Vell's negative atoms with Rick's positive ones but moments after returning to Earth, we see that someone was following the young man, Yon-Rogg . Mar-Vell faces his enemy and get an attack that should have killed any other Kree, but not the new Mar-Vell, so Yon-Rogg runs away with Carol.

Roy Thomas is intended to make clear what are new powers of Mar-Vell: The powers are limited to those granted by the Negabands: flight and convert mental energy in physic energy (apart from the change from the Negative Zone to the "positive " one).

Rick y Marv empiezan a acostumbrarse el uno al otro (vemos como mientras Rick está en la Zona Negativa las negabandas aunque no le den los mismos poderes que al Capitán Marvel le protegen con un aura similar a la de los Green Lantern cuando están en el espacio) mientras que Yon-Rogg planea acabar con la vida del joven compañero del Capitán Kree. En este número seremos testigos del inicio de la carrera de Rick Jones en el mundo de la música (toca en un bar y un promotor musical se fija en él aunque Rick lo rechaza). Se cambia con Mar-Vell, parece que el Kree ha encontrado a Yon-Rogg y se dirige a otra base-laboratorio secreto Kree (cada vez aparecen más) donde su enemigo planea usar el “psico-magnitrón” (un aparato Kree prohibido en el pasado por los Kree que al parecer otorga poderes espaciales a los Kree) para ponerse a la altura del Capitán (recordar que tiene a Carol Danvers como rehén). Con el poder de este aparato Yon-Rogg recrea al Mandroide, un hombre-cosa asesino que era utilizado para cazar y ejecutar traidores. Mar-Vell se enfrenta a este ser y es superado aunque consigue hacer que el Mandroide dispara al “psico-magnitrón” y se desvanece aunque aún tiene que vencer a Yon-Rogg. En la pelea Yon-Rogg dispara accidentalmente a Carol, aunque poco después logra vencerle, aunque en vez de matarlo salva a Carol de la explosión del psico-magnitrón (adquiriendo sus poderes de Ms Marvel).

Por cierto, hoy sale a la venta la primera aparición de Carol Danvers como nueva Captain Marvel en Avenging Spider-man. 

Rick and Marv start to get used to each other (We see that as long as Rick is in the Negative Zone, the negabands, even they don't give him the same powers as Captain Marvel, they protect Rick with an aura similar to the one of the Green Lantern when they are in space) while Yon-Rogg plans to end the life of the young sidekick of the Kree Captain. In this issue we will witness the beginning of the career of Rick Jones in the music business (he plays at a bar and a music promoter tries to hire him but Rick refuses). Shortly after he changes with Mar-Vell, it seems that the Kree has found Yon-Rogg and goes to another base-secret lab where the enemy plans to use the "psyche-magnitron" (a Kree device prohibited in the past by the Kree which apparently empowers them) to beat Captain Marvel (remember that Carol Danvers is there as a hostage). With the power of this device Yon-Rogg recreates the Mandroid a killer-thing that was used to capture and execute traitors. Mar-Vell faces this being that is more powerful than him and tricks it to shoot the "psyche-magnitron" but he still have to beat Yon-Rogg. In the fight Yon-Rogg accidentally shoots Carol, but Mar-Vell manages to defeat him and soon after instead of killing him he decides to save Carol from the explosion of psyche-magnitron (where and when she acquired her powers of Ms. Marvel).

By the way, today goes on sale the first appearance of Carol Danvers as the new Captain Marvel in the 9th issue of Avengin Spider-man.

Rick se despierta donde todo terminó en el número previo. Mar-Vell se lleva a Carol a un hospital y a Rick a la ciudad para que busque trabajo y alojamiento. Tras unas cuantas negativas lo encuentra en las Torres Minos donde el Doctor Webb, un famoso sociólogo que aloja gratis a numerosos inquilinos. Rick no tarde en hacer amigos y pasar unos agradables días pero las cosas no son tan “bonitas” como parecen. Al cabo de unos días cosas extrañas empiezan a suceder (aparecen monstruos, fuego,...) y Mar-Vell ayuda a investigar, parece que el Doctor está investigando con la gente y les hace enfrentarse a sus peores miedos. Cuando Mar-Vell descubre que el tirano Doctor está detrás de todos esos sucesos . Le ataca con rayos Gamma que aparte de debilitarle empiezan a forzar el cambio entre él y Rick aunque uno de los inquilinos le salva dando su vida.

Rick wakes up where everything ended in the previous issue. Mar-Vell takes Carol to a hospital and Rick to the city to look for a job and a place to stay. After a few negative interviews he finds both things in the Minos Towers where Dr. Webb, a famous sociologist hosts numerous people for free. Rick makes friends and spend a few pleasant days but things are not as "nice" as they seem. After a few days, strange things start happen (monsters, fire, ...) and Mar-Vell helps him to investigate. It seems that the Doctor is investigating with people and makes them face their worst fears. When Mar-Vell discovers that the tyrant Doctor is behind all these events is attacked with Gamma-ray and apart from start to weaken him it forces the change between him and Rick although one of the tenants saves them but dies doing it.

Avengers 72 .- ¿Os sabéis el de Escorpio?

Rick se encuentra con el Capitán América de camino a la mansión de los Vengadores, al parecer ha descubierto algo. Justo al comenzar la reunión con el resto de los Vengadores les llama Dum Dum Dugan para confesarles que tres personas importantes han desaparecido (y se han encontrado símbolos de Escorpio en los lugares donde desaparecieron) y que Nick Fury ha muerto (“aparentemente”, en la colección de Shield). Es entonces cuando Rick puede contarles lo que ha averiguado... y es que esa misma noche fue a casa de Nick Fury para ver si podía unirse a Shield pero se encontró con otra persona... con Escorpio quien no tarda en atacarle, aunque poco después entrechocará sus negabandas para que aparezca el Capitán Marvel y siga y se enfrente a Escorpio aunque en principio parecía que iba a ser fácil queda inconsciente tras un ataque con la llave del zodiaco. Alguien está escuchando toda la conversación, Escorpio aparece en pantalla y se presenta ante los Vengadores justo antes de hacer que la pantalla explote. 

 Cuando despiertan son prisioneros de Escorpio y se encuentran en su laboratorio/base donde instantes después aparecen el resto de miembros del Zodiaco, quienes serán testigos de la muerte de los Vengadores (¿o no...?). El zodiaco se entretiene contándoles sus planes de dominación mundial mientras Hank Pym se las arregla para controlar unas hormigas para que los liberen. Los Vengadores junto a Rick Jones se enfrentan a los once miembros del zodiaco y sí, once, porque en medio de la batalla descubrimos que Nick Fury es Escorpio (bueno, en realidad le estaba suplantando a su hermano, el verdadero Escorpio, para hacer salir al resto del grupo de sus escondites). Rick declina la oferta de Mar-Vell para luchar, por orgullo esta es una batalla para el joven (casi)Vengador, y él salva a los Vengadores en el último momento. Al final, el Capitán América le agradece a Rick el haberles salvado a todos y parece que está a punto de ofrecerle ser su compañero de nuevo aunque Rick se va sin escuchar el resto, le prometió a Mar-Vell guardar su relación en secreto.

Rick goes to the mansion of the Avengers, he has apparently discovered something. Just when the meeting of the avengers starts the Avengers are called by Dum Dum Dugan who tells them that three important people have disappeared (and Scorpio symbols were found in the places where they disappeared) and Nick Fury is dead ("apparently" in his Shield collection). That's when Rick can tell them what he has found out ... and that night, a few hours earlier he went to visit Nick Fury to see if he could join Shield but he found someone else ... Scorpio who soon attacked him, but shortly after his negabands clashed to bring Captain Marvel there and to follow and confront Scorpio. Initially it seemed that it would be easy to beat him, he fell unconscious after an attack with the zodiac key. Someone was listening to the entire conversation, Scorpio who reveals himself on the screen t right before the screen explodes. 

 

When they wake up they are prisoners of Scorpio and are in his lab / base where moments later we see the other members of the Zodiac, who will witness the death of the Avengers (or not ...?). The zodiac is wasting time telling them their plans for world domination as Hank Pym manages to control ants to release them. The Avengers with Rick Jones face the eleven members of the zodiac and yes, eleven, because in the middle of the battle we discover that Nick Fury is Scorpio (well, actually he was impersonating his brother, the true Scorpio, to output the zodiac). Rick declines the offer of Mar-Vell to fight this is a battle for the young (almost) Avenger, and he saves the Avengers in the last minute. In the end, Captain America is grateful to Rick, he saved them and it seems that he is about to offer him again a place beside him as his partner but Rick will not hear the rest, he promised Mar-Vell to keep their relationship in secret for now.

Fusion: Hellboy + Yugioh

A su vez, Mike Mignola (el creador de Hellboy) dibujó a su creación con una camiseta de dicho personaje de manga / As you can see in the picture, the author of Yugioh (Kazuki Takahashi) is a fan of Hellboy and drew a Hellboy with the look of his character. Momento de la semana (I).- Behold ... The Vision

Me invento una nueva sección para el blog, que de momento se ocupará de rellenar las pantallas de este blog  durante los sábados veraniegos (y después quién sabe si seguirá o no). Y comenzamos con la primera página de Avengers 57, la primera aparición de un gran personaje de los Vengadores: La Visión. Ultimate Spider-man. Peter Parker: agente de Shield

Aprovechando un poco que hoy se estrena la película The Amazing Spider-man hoy os voy a hablar de mis primeras impresiones sobre la nueva serie animada del trepamuros: Ultimate Spider-man (de la que he visto sus primeros 12 episodios), emitida en Disney XD y ya renovada para una segunda temporada.

No es la típica serie de Spider-man, al menos su enfoque no es el usual y está muy centrada en las audiencias más jóvenes. Uno supondría por su nombre que adaptaría más o menos fielmente los cómics del Universo Ultimate escritos por Brian Michael Bendis y dibujados Bagley, Immonen, Lafuente o Sara Picheli entre otros. Sí y no. Más o menos se encuadra en el universo Ultimate (al menos en cuanto a Peter) aunque muchos otros elementos son sacados de las películas de Marvel (Coulson, Iron-man, Thor, Hulk, ...) y otros son simplemente nuevos (el grupo de héroes de Peter, el origen de Venom o su portador por ejemplo). Como responsables tenemos al propio Bendis, a Paul Dini y al grupo responsable de Ben 10 y otras series Man of Action (Steven T. Seagle, Joe Kelly, Joe Casey, and Duncan Rouleau).

Aunque la serie se encuadre más o menos en el universo Ultimate los capítulos no adaptan ningún arco argumental ni cómic en concreto de Spider-man (quizás un poco en el caso del capítulo con Lobezno/Wolverine), se podría decir que en general son historias originales, algo que a primera vista puede ser positivo y sorprender. Nos encontramos en el segundo año de "carrera" de Spider-man como super-héroe, por lo que se evita tener que volver a contar la historia de su origen, otra cosa que a primera vista podría ser positiva ya que se dejan de contar un origen que prácticamente se conoce en toda la Tierra.

Por lo tanto tenemos a un Peter Parker aún en el instituto, que empieza a trabajar con Shield para entrenarse como héroe. Nick Fury le asigna a un grupo de jóvenes Super-héroes compuesto por Luke Cage, Puño de Hierro, Tigre Blanco (la última versión que aparece en la Academia de Vengadores) y Nova.

La serie se centra sobre todo en el humor, en multitud de escenas podemos ver como Peter rompe el cuarto muro y se dirige a nosotros (¿será idea de Kelly? Lo digo por su Masacre...), aunque su humor puede llegar a ser en muchos momentos bastante simple y por lo tanto aveces solo apto para los más pequeños de la casa (lo que no suele pasar con las series de Marvel que en general eran interesantes para todos los públicos). También se echa de menos ver los típicos problemas de Peter, las dificultades para llegar a fin de mes, y esas cosas que hacen a Spider-man humano (no diga que tenga que ser un Peter siempre angustiado y deprimido, pero debería haber un equilibrio). No obstante en un par de capítulos aún se puede ver algo de la esencia del Spider-man de toda la vida, aunque tienen mucho que mejorar para estar a la altura de Spider-man (no sé como han podido renovarla y no a AEMH, años luz mejor).

Valoración: 5.5-6/10

I will give you my first impressions of the new animated series of Marvel's wall-crawler: Ultimate Spider-man (of which I have seen its first 12 episodes), aired on Disney XD and already renewed for a second season.

This is not a typical Spider-man TV series, at least it's not the usual approach and is very focused on younger audiences. One would suppose that having its name it would adapt more or less faithfully the comics of the Ultimate Universe written by Brian Michael Bendis and drawn by Bagley, Immonen, Lafuente, Picheli and others. Yes and no. It more or less fits into the Ultimate universe (at least with his Peter) but many other elements come from the Marvel movies (Coulson, Iron-man, Thor, Hulk, ...) and others are simply new (Peter's group of heroes, the origin of Venom or his host). The writers of the show are: Bendis himself, Paul Dini and the group responsible for Ben 10 and other series Man of Action (Steven T. Seagle, Joe Kelly, Joe Casey, and Duncan Rouleau).

Even though the series takes place, more or less, in the Ultimate universe, its stories don't adapt any particular comic of Ultimate Spider-man (well, maybe more or less with the Wolverine / Spider-man one), so you could say that in general these stories are original, which at first could be positive and surprising. We are in the second year of "career" of Spider-man as a super-hero, so they avoid  re-tell the story of his origin.

So we have a Peter Parker still in high school, starting to work with Shield to train as a hero. Nick Fury assigned him to a group composed by young Super-Heroes: Luke Cage, Iron Fist, White Tiger (the latest version who appears in Avengers Academy) and Nova.

 The series focuses primarily on humor in many scenes we see how Peter breaks the fourth wall and talks to us (maybe ​​Kelly's idea? remember his Deadpool? ...), but its humor is quite simple, almost stupid or too easy, and sometimes therefore suitable only for children (which is not usual, Marvel used to have good tv series which were generally interesting to all audiences, children and adults). It also misses seeing the typical problems of Peter, financial problems, and those things that make human Spider-man (not saying you have to be a Peter always depressed, but there should be a balance). However in a couple of episodes you can still see some of the essence of Spider-man, but it has to improve a lot (I can't understand how they have renewed this one and not AHMS, much much much better).

Rating: 5.5-6/10

25º Semana negra de Gijón: Del 6 al 15 de Julio

Al final se celebrará la 25 Semana Negra de Gijón lo que hace un año parecia más difícil de lo que se pueda pensar. A los problemas ideológicos prácticamente contrarios del equipo de la semana negra y a los del partido gobernante en Gijón se le sumaba la difícil tarea de encontrarle una localización al Festival. Al final se llego a un acuerdo "en extremis" y se decidió celebrar en el recinto de Naval Gijón (aunque hasta esta semana no se pudo asegurar su celebración por haber sido solicitadas medidas cautelares contra el festival por parte de vecinos cercanos a la zona). 

Personalmente creo que parte de los problemas se podrían solucionar, al menos los concernientes al ruido que causa. A parte de la sección literaria, la semana negra está compuesta por multitud de puestos con artesania y ropa (y otras chorradas), conciertos, restaurantes y bares en carpas, la noria y otras atracciones. Las atracciones tienen la musica a un volumen que parece que te encuentras en una discoteca, a penas puede oirte nadie, y eso en casi todas (y luego están los de los bingos también pegando voces), y eso debería poder solucionarse (no me parece que una atracción tenga que tener la música a todo volumen para poder girar, funcionar), simplemente poner unos límites al volumen y a partir de cierta hora que se bajen aún más esos ruidos (después de que terminen los conciertos por ejemplo). 

El programa.

Los autores (por desgracia los que más podrían interesarme y a muchos de vosotros, como George R. Martin, asistirán a Celsius 232, del 18 al 22 de Julio en Avilés, donde se celebrará este año la Asturcon en vez de la semana negra).

Mañana estreno de... The Amazing Spider-man

Mañana llega a España el (¿esperado?) reboot de la franquicia del hombre araña de marvel: The Amazing Spider-man. De nuevo el origen, aunque con otro villano, el Lagarto (y su primera novia seria, Gwen Stacy). Supongo que lo que no me hace tanta gracia es que quieran darle tanto enfasis al hecho de la muerte de los padres de Peter (no sé pero parece que le dan más importancia a eso que a la muerte de Ben Parker, quizás no), veamos y a ver si con suerte esta a la altura de... ¿Spider-man  o Spider-man 2? (con que no haga un bailecito a lo Spider-man 3 ya será mejor).-

“The amazing Spider-Man” es la historia de Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), un estudiante de secundaria que fue abandonado por sus padres cuando era niño, dejándolo a cargo de su tío Ben (Martin Sheen) y su tía May (Sally Field). Como la mayoría de los adolescentes de su edad, Peter trata de averiguar quién es y qué quiere llegar a ser. Peter también está encontrando su camino con su primer amor de secundaria, Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), y juntos luchan por su amor con compromiso. Cuando Peter descubre un misterioso maletín que perteneció a su padre, comienza la búsqueda para entender la desaparición de sus padres, una búsqueda que le lleva directamente a Oscorp, el laboratorio del Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans), ex compañero de trabajo de su padre. Mientras Spider-Man se encuentra en plena colisión con el alter-ego de Connors, el Lagarto, Peter hará elecciones que alterarán sus opciones para usar sus poderes y darán forma a un destino que le convertirá en un superhéroe.

Por cierto, ¿qué será mejor ... CON O SIN 3D?

Sombras en fuga (Shadows in flight)

La semana pasada me encontré, un poco por casualidad, con el último libro de la saga de las sombras (del Juego de Ender), o de la saga de Bean (y también un poco de Peter), como a mi me gusta llamarla. La historia transcurre pocos años después de los acontecimientos del final de "La sombra del Gigante" (el cuarto de la saga de Bean) y por lo tanto toda la historia transcurre en el espacio, a velocidades relativistas en busca de una cura para la clave de Anton.

Durante algún tiempo esta iba a ser la historia que uniría los destinos de los hijos de Bean con los personajes de la saga de Ender (tras los acontecimientos de "Hijos de la mente", aunque al final esos hechos serán narrados en "Shadows alive" (el propio Orson Scott Card lo explica todo aquí).

"Al final de La sombra del gigante, Bean Delphiki huía hacia las estrellas con tres de sus hijos, los mismos que comparten con él unos genes que otorgan tanto una inteligencia extraordinaria como la condena a una vida corta y físicamente cruel. Ahora, la extrema velocidad de este viaje parece dar a las generaciones de científicos de la Tierra más tiempo para buscar una cura. Sin embargo, no servirá de nada. Todos serán olvidados; tanto ellos como sus actos se perderán en la historia. Oponiéndose a este destino fatídico, Bean Delphiki está a punto de hacer un descubrimiento que le permitirá salvarse, y con él a toda la humanidad. En Sombras en fuga Bean encontrará un espacio para crecer, vivir sin dolor, explorar su propia anomalía genética e intentar hallar la cura para combatir una misteriosa enfermedad que resuena como un susurro lejano a través de la galaxia."

El libro es bastante corto, apenas 221 páginas (y por 16 €), así que de primeras te sientes un poco defraudado por la brevedad del relato y quizás, más que el precio, el hecho de estar acostumbrados a historias de Card de mayor extensión. Por otro lado el público al que va destinado no es que no sea amplio, pero está limitado a los lectores de esta saga ya que si no te has leído toda la saga de Bean te perderás todo el trasfondo sobre el que se apoya esta obra (a ver si reeditan toda la saga, aún recuerdo lo que me costó encontrar "La sombra del gigante"). También quiero comentar que hay algunos fallos con la traducción (alguna frase mal traducida e incluso alguna palabra que se les ha olvidado traducir).

En la historia conoceremos a los tres hijos de Bean que nacieron con su misma particularidad: La clave de Anton, la misma que les hace ser tremendamente inteligentes desde una temprana edad, pero que no dejarán de crecer y morirán de gigantismo y apenas llegar a los veinte años. Los tres hijos de Julian/Bean ("El gigante") y Petra con la clave de Anton son: Andrew "Ender" (el científico), Carlotta (La ingeniera), y Cincinnatus "Sergeant" (el guerrero). O.S. Card hace interesante la vida de este cuarteto que lleva toda una vida en una nave viajando a velocidades relativistas y poco a poco olvidados por la humanidad, en especial a unos años más inteligentes que cualquier genio pero que aún así siguen comportándose como niños.  Lo más importante que se puede sacar para la futura obra que reunirá las dos sagas es que... la Reina Colmena le ha mentido a Ender.

En definitiva, una lectura interesante para los lectores de la saga de Ender y de Bean, que aunque sea bastante breve te acabará atrapando.

Last week I found this book by accident (well I just was going to buy the blu-ray of Akira and I saw it...), with the last book in the saga of the shadows (Ender's Game), or how I like to call it:  Bean's saga (and a bit of Peter). The story takes place a few years after the events of the end of "Shadow of the Giant" (the fourth in the Shadows' series) and therefore the entire story takes place in space at relativistic speeds looking for a cure for the Anton's key.

For a while this was going to be the story that would unite the destinies of the children of Bean with the characters of Ender's Saga (after the events of "Children of the Mind", but these events will be narrated in "Shadows alive" (Orson Scott Card explains why here).

At the end of Shadow of the Giant, Bean flees to the stars with three of his children--the three who share the engineered genes that gave him both hyper-intelligence and a short, cruel physical life. The time dilation granted by the speed of their travel gives Earth’s scientists generations to seek a cure, to no avail. In time, they are forgotten--a fading ansible signal speaking of events lost to Earth’s history. But the Delphikis are about to make a discovery that will let them save themselves, and perhaps all of humanity in days to come.

For there in space before them lies a derelict Formic colony ship. Aboard it, they will find both death and wonders--the life support that is failing on their own ship, room to grow, and labs in which to explore their own genetic anomaly and the mysterious disease that killed the ship’s colony.

The book is quite short, just 237 pages, so at first you feel a little disappointed by the brevity of the story and perhaps more than for the price, the fact that we are used to read longer stories by Card. On the other hand, the intended audience is limited just to readers who have read Bean's saga because if you have not read the whole saga you will lose all the background which supports this story.

In the story we meet Bean's three children, the ones who were born with the same peculiarity: The Anton's key, it makes them extremely intelligent since a young age, but they won't stop growing and they will die of gigantism before they reach their 20's. The three sons of Julian / Bean ("The Giant") and Petra with  the Anton key are: Andrew "Ender" (the scientist), Carlotta (the engineer), and Cincinnatus "Sergeant" (the warrior). O.S. Card makes their lifes in the ship interesting, these children who have lifed a lifetime on a ship traveling at relativistic speeds and gradually forgotten by humanity, especially like many Card's character, children more intelligent than any genius but who still continue to behave like children. The most important thing that can be drawn for Whadows alive is that ... the Hive Queen has lied to Ender.

In short, an interesting read for readers of the Bean's saga, and even it is too short you will end up hooked to the adventures of these three little "giants".

Captain Marvel, Protector of the Universe (XIV): SHAZAM! La llegada de Rick Jones

A partir del número 17 de la colección el destino de Mar-Vell quedará ligado al de un terrícola que tuvo mucho que ver en el origen de algunos de los eventos más importantes del universo Marvel (al menos de los 60 y 70, aunque las nuevas generaciones probablemente no tengan mucha idea de quien es).

En los mismos orígenes del Universo Marvel de la edad de plata aparece un personaje que (en Mayo de 1962, The Incredible Hulk #1) jugó un papel esencial en algunos eventos como el accidente que creara a Hulk o la formación de los Vengadores. Podríamos definirlo como el primer "sidekick" profesional del universo marvel (por el número de superhéroes a los que ha acompañado fielmente hasta que ha conseguido sus propios poderes, en cómics como Hulk, Los Vengadores, Capitán América, Capitán Marvel, Rom, Capitán Marvel (III, Genis-Vell) y siempre volviendo a Hulk).

 ¿Quién es Rick Jones? Richard "Rick" Millhouse Jones es un joven nacido en Scarsdale, Arizona. Sus padres murieron cuando aún era joven (aunque su padre le regaló una guitarra que será muy importante para él y hará que en el futuro se convierta en músico, aspecto que se verá reflejado en los cómics de los 70 del Capitán Marvel y en sus giras en el Microverso cuando Genis estaba loco) y pasó parte de su infancia entre varios orfanatos para acabar en una institución llamada Tempest Town. Se acabo escapando de dicha institución y viajó por el suroeste del país trabajando de lo que podía y consiguiendo ahorrar para comprarse un coche. Con 16 años se encontraba en Nuevo Méjico donde su vida cambiará tras aceptar una apuesta, colarse en una base militar, aunque ni él ni sus amigos sabían que ahí se estaba a punto de probar la bomba gamma ideada por el Doctor Bruce Banner.

From the 17th issue of Captain Marvel Mar-Vell's fate will be linked to an earthling who was involved in the origin of some of the most important events of the Marvel universe (at least in the 60's and 70's, nevertheless I guess that new generations may not have much idea of who he is).

In the very origins of the Universe Marvel (Silver Age) a character (in May 1962, The Incredible Hulk # 1) played an essential role in some events like the accident that created the Hulk or the formation of the Avengers. He could be called the first professional "sidekick" of marvel universe (he was the "sidekick" of many heroes until he got his own powers, anyway he helped Hulk, The Avengers, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Rom, Captain Marvel (III, Genis-Vell) and always returned to the Hulk).

Who is Rick Jones? Richard "Rick" Millhouse Jones is a young man born in Scarsdale, Arizona. His parents died when he was young (although his father gave him a guitar that will be very important to him, he will become a musician, something that will be reflected in the comics of Captain Marvel in the 70's and his tours in the microverse when Genis was crazy) and spent part of his childhood in several orphanages ending up in an institution called Tempest Town. He run away  from the institution and traveled around the Southwest working and trying to save money to buy a car. When he was 16, he was in New Mexico where his life changed after accepting a bet to sneak into a military base, although neither he nor his friends knew that there was about to be a test of the gamma bomb created by Dr. Bruce Banner.

Incredible Hulk (1-6).-

El resto es prácticamente historia, Bruce Banner va corriendo a intentar salvar a Rick de la explosión (que debería haber parado su ayudante, aunque ya sabéis, en esos años de guerra fría "los espías comunistas estaban en todas partes", al menos en el universo marvel parece que sí) tirandolo en una zanja, aunque como ya sabéis el Doctor Banner absorbió radiación gamma. Después Rick le lleva a la enfermería, y ambos quedan en observación. Al anochecer Banner comienza a cambiar y se convierte en una criatura de color gris (verde desde el número dos de Incredible Hulk), Rick le sigue para intentar calmarlo, a partir de entonces Rick será el fiel ayudante. La culpa y la amistad le unirán a Bruce Banner y Hulk para siempre, además en esos primeros años era el único que conoce la identidad secreta de Hulk. Así que durante la breve andadura de la primera etapa Rick acompaña fielmente al gigante esmeralda/Banner (podemos destacar que en el número 6 crea la brigada juvenil, un grupo de jóvenes con una radio de onda corta que está comunicado por todo el país). Recordar también su aparición en Fantastic Four 12.

Luego según vuestro punto de vista podríamos incluir las aventuras de Rampaging Hulk donde Rick y Hulk corren aventuras por todo el mundo con la extraterrestre Bereet y hacen los posible para acabar con la invasión de los Krylorianos (o simplemente creeros que fue una película de Bereet).

The rest is almost history, Bruce Banner tries to save Rick from the explosion (which should have stopped by his assistant, but you know, in those years of cold war "communist spies were everywhere," at least in the marvel universe) by pulling it into a ditch, but as you know Dr. Banner absorbed gamma radiation. Then Rick takes him to the infirmary, and both have to wait there under observation. At dusk Banner begins to change and becomes a gray creature (green from the second issue), Rick tries to calm him, and from then Rick will be his faithful sidekick. The guilt and friendship will join Rick to Bruce Banner and Hulk forever, also in those early years he was the only one who knew the secret identity of the Hulk. So for the short journey from the first stage, Rick faithfully accompanies the emerald giant / Banner (in the 6th issue he creates the teen brigade, a group of young people with a shortwave radio that is connected across the country). Remember that he also appeared in Fantastic Four 12.

Then according to your point of view we could include the adventures of Rampaging Hulk where the Hulk and Rick have adventures around Europe, well the world with the alien Bereet and together try to stop the invasion of the Krylorians (or just believe that it was a movie done by Bereet) .

The Avengers (1-17), Rick el casi Vengador.-

En el primer número de los Vengadores Rick juega un papel bastante importante, Loki usa la imagen de Hulk para causar un accidente y que recaiga la culpa sobre él. Rick y su brigada juvenil buscan ayuda para encontrar a Hulk (Rick cree que es inocente pero sea como sea prefiere que sea encontrado) e intentan contactar con los Cuatro Fantásticos aunque Loki intercede para que el mensaje se desvíe y llegue a Thor, aunque a su vez también es oído por Iron-man, El Hombre Hormiga y la Avispa. El resto también es historia, al final de ese número se formarían los Vengadores. En los siguientes números Rick seguiría acompañando a este variopinto grupo de héroes (aún cuando Hulk se fue) hasta que llegan nuevos reclutas (Ojo de Halcón, Mercurio y la Bruja Escarlata) y Rick no es uno de los Vengadores oficiales. En el cuarto número conoce al Capitán América y pronto se harán amigos (según Rogers tiene un gran parecido con Bucky) y en el quinto número comienza a entrenarle.  Rick quiere ser compañero del Capitán, quiere ser una especie de Bucky 2 y en el séptimo número se pone su traje, aunque el Capitán América reacciona bastante mal a ello, aún se siente culpable por la muerte de su antiguo compañero y no soportaría que algo le pasara a Rick. En el número 8 liberará a los Vengadores de la nave de Kang. En el décimo número los Vengadores piensan en hacer miembro oficial a Rick aunque el Capitán América dice que esa es decisión suya. En el siguiente número será secuestrado por Inmortus (y en otro más o menos por el Conde Nefaria). En el 15 le vuelven a secuestrar, esta vez por el Barón Zemo y el Capitán América viajará al amazonas para salvarlo y vengar la muerte de Bucky (Zemo muere aparentemente en la batalla). Aparece brevemente en los números 16 y 17 (donde vemos como se da por muerto a Hulk) pero no es uno de los nuevos vengadores y desaparece sin dar explicación alguna aunque sabemos a dónde fue...

In the first issue of the Avengers Rick plays an important role, Loki uses the image of Hulk to cause an accident to blame him. Rick and his teen brigade seek help to find Hulk (Rick believes he is innocent but either way he prefers to find him) and they try to contact the Fantastic Four but Loki intercede so the message reaches Thor (like Loki planned), but the same message is also heard by Iron-Man, Ant Man and the Wasp. The rest is history also, at the end of that number they would form the Avengers. In the following issues, Rick will accompany this group of heroes (even though the Hulk left soon) until they get new recruits (Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver) and Rick is not one of the new official Avengers. In the fourth issue he meets Captain America they soon become good friends (Rick has a strong resemblance to Bucky) and in the fifth number Captain America begins to train him. Rick wants to become something like the new bucky, a kind of Bucky 2, and in the seventh issue he finds and wears Bucky's suit, but Captain America reacts quite badly, he still feels guilty for the death of his former partner and he could not stand that something could happen to Rick. In the 8th issue Rick frees the Avengers in Kang's ship. In the tenth issue the Avengers propose to make Rick an official member of the Avengers but Captain America says that's up to him and he will decide. In the next issue he will be kidnapped by Immortus (and in other issue, more or less by Count Nefaria). In the 15th one he will be kidnaped again, this time by Baron Zemo and Captain America will travel to the Amazon to save him and avenge the death of Bucky (Zemo seemingly died in the battle by accident). He appears briefly in the 16th and 17th issue, he is not one of the New Avengers and disappears without explanation...

Vuelta con Hulk, Tales to Astonish.-

En los números 62 y 64 Rick vuelve a ayudar a Hulk aunque en esa época seguía con los Vengadores. En el número 64 salva a Banner de la cárcel (le acusaban de espía), le confiesa a un alto cargo la verdadera identidad de Hulk para que le indulten (aparentemente parecía el Presidente). También hay que comentar los números 25 y 26 de Fantastic Four donde Hulk se enfrenta a ellos, en el 26 Rick le da una cápsula Gamma para forzar el cambio a Banner cuando estaba debilitado (aunque antes le reprochó el haberle abandonado por los Vengadores).

Rick vuelve de forma definitiva en Tales to Astonish 68. En los próximos números Banner y Hulk "morirán" aparentemente unas cuantas veces aunque la del 69 es bastante sería, y Rick secuestra el cadáver de Banner para intentar transformarlo en Hulk con la máquina de rayos Gamma de Banner y lo consigue, Banner despierta en el cuerpo de Hulk (aunque si vuelve a convertirse en Banner morirá según los cálculos del Doctor Banner). En el 72 parece que Hulk muere (aunque en realidad ha sido teletransportado por el Líder) y el ejercito detiene a Rick para intentar averiguar la verdadera identidad de Hulk (mientras tanto Hulk en el número 75 viaja al futuro). En el número 77 el Comandante Talbot consigue sonsacarle a Rick la identidad de Hulk (ya que pensaba que había muerto y quería limpiar la imagen de Bruce Banner a quien seguían acusando de ser un espía comunista). Hulk vuelve al presente en el siguiente número. Hasta el número 111 más o menos de Increible Hulk (Tales to Astonish pasa a llamarse Incredible Hulk en su número 102).

In the 62th and 64th issues Rick returns to help Hulk (while he was with the avengers). In the 64th saves Banner from prison (he was accused of spying), he confesses to a senior member of the State Hulk's true identity to try to free him (apparently seemed to be the President of the US). I must also talk about the 25th and 26th of Fantastic Four where Hulk confronts them (and the Avengers), in the 26th Rick gives the Hulk a Gamma capsule to force the change to Banner when he was weakened (but before the hulk reproached him for having abandoned him for the Avengers).

Rick becomes his sidekick again in Tales to Astonish 68. In future issues Banner and Hulk "die" apparently a few times although it is more or less true in the 69th issue, and Rick has to steal Banner's corpse to try to transform it into the Hulk with the Gamma-ray machine and saves Banner. Banner (Banner's mind) wakes up in Hulk's body (although if Banner reverts to his own body he may die according to him). In the 72th it seems that Hulk dies (although he has actually been teleported by the Leader) and the army stops and locks up Rick to try to find out the true identity of the Hulk (Hulk will travel to the future in the 75th issue). In the 77th issue Commander Talbot convinces Rick to tell him the true identity of the Hulk (because he thought Banner had died and he wanted to clean the image of Bruce Banner who were accused of being a Communist spy). Hulk returns to the present in the next issue. Rick will be around until the 111th issue of the Incredible Hulk (Tales to Astonish was renamed as Incredible Hulk in the 102nd issue).

Compañero del Capitán América, Bucky II.-

Antes de compartir átomos con el Capitán Kree volverá a ser compañero del Capitán América por un breve periodo (Captain America 110,111,113,114,115,116 y 118). En el número 110 el Capitán América se ve sorprendido por un Hulk totalmente descontrolado, al poco aparece Rick e intenta calmarlo aunque también le ataca a él y le deja inconsciente. El Capitán América le salva y le lleva a su apartamento. Cuando se despierta se vuelve a repetir la misma escena que en los Vengadores 7, Rick se pone el traje de Bucky y Steve Rogers reacciona como la primera vez aunque esta vez Rick le convence para que vuelva a tener un compañero. Rick Jones se convierte en Bucky II y se enfrentan a Hydra y Madame Hydra.

En el siguiente número le comienza a entrenar (Rick aunque es un gran acrobata y sabe Judo no era tan bueno como Bucky aunque hay que tener en cuenta que era su primera misión juntos el Capitán y Bucky habían combatido en decenas de batallas en la guerra). Poco después miembros de Hydra secuestran a Rick. Rick consigue escapar pero cuando el Capitán América iba a salvarle le matan a tiros aparentemente.

En el 113, en el cadáver del Capitán debajo de su máscara se encuentran con otra máscara con el aspecto de Steve Rogers, ¿Existía Steve Rogers? En el funeral los Vengadores se ven envueltos en una trampa de Hydra y son secuestrados, Rick que llegaba tarde les sigue y poco después el Capitán América reaparece y junto a Rick acaban con los planes de Hydra. El Capitán América vuelve a tener identidad secreta. En el siguiente número Cráneo Rojo reaparece con el Cubo Cósmico y tras vencer al Capitán intercambia su cuerpo con el suyo en el 115, Rick es el único que se preocupa por la desaparición del Capitán América, ni Sharon, ni los Vengadores parecen preocupados. En el 116 Rick consigue encontrarlo, aunque en realidad sabemos que es Cráneo Rojo, quien le trata de forma despectiva y prácticamente le echa. En el número 118 le vemos brevemente, aunque solo para marcharse y poco después encontrarse con las negabandas y Mar-Vell (en el Captain Marvel 17).

Before sharing atoms with the Captain Kree he will be the new partner of Captain America for a brief period (Captain America 110,111,113,114,115,116 and 118). In No. 110, Captain America is surprised by the attack of a totally uncontrolled Hulk, and Rick soon appears and tries to calm him but Hulk also attacks him and leaves him unconscious. Captain America saves Rick and takes him to his apartment. When he wakes up he repeats the same scene seen in the Avengers 7, Rick puts on Bucky's suit and Steve Rogers reacts as he did the first time but this time Rick convinces him to have a partner. Rick Jones becomes Bucky II and faces Madame Hydra and Hydra with the Captain.

In the next issue will he starts training (although Rick is a great acrobat and does Judo he was not as good as Bucky although it should be noted that it was their first mission together and Bucky and the Captain had fought dozens of battles in the war) . Shortly after he is kidnapped by members of Hydra. Rick manages to escape but when Captain America was supposed to save him he is apparently killed.

In the 113th issue, under the Captain's mask they find another mask that looks like Steve Rogers,  Was he real? At the funeral, the Avengers are caught in a trap of Hydra, kidnapped, fortunately Rick was late and he can follow the Hydra members and soon after Captain America reappears and with Rick they defeat Hydra. Captain America once again has a secret identity. 

In the following issue the Red Skull comes back with the Cosmic Cube and after beating the Captain he exchanges his body with Steve. In the 115th, Rick is the only one who cares for the disappearance of Captain America, Sharon and the Avengers don't seem worried. Rick finds him in the 116th issue, but we know that he actually found the Red Skull in Steve's body. Anyway, the "Captain Skull" who talks to Rick in a derogatory manner and practically throws him out. In the 118th issue we see Rick briefly, he is leaving and soon will find the negabands and Mar-Vell (Captain Marvel 17).

Por cierto, a los que os preguntéis el por qué del título con "Shazam", como brevemente introduje en la última entrega de esta sección, Roy Thomas, en un homenaje al Capitán Marvel de Fawcett (y ahora "Shazam" en la nueva DC), haría que Rick Jones fuera una especie de Billy Batson intercambiando su lugar con el Capitán Marvel. En uno de los primeros números de la etapa de Peter David podemos oírle decir SHAZAM mientras entrechoca sus negabandas en una clara referencia a ello.

Dentro de unos meses, cuando hable de Genis-Vell intentaré resumir las aventuras de Rick Jones en los 80 y 90 (lo que es principalmente las pocas apariciones con Rom y Hulk de nuevo).

By the way, if you wonder why I wrote "Shazam", as I briefly have introduced in the previous post of this section, Roy Thomas (who loves the Golden Age's comicbooks), in a tribute to Fawcett's Captain Marvel (and now "Shazam" in the new DC), Rick Jones would be a kind of Billy Batson exchanging places with Captain Marvel. In one of the first issues of Peter David's Captain Marvel, we can see how Rick says "SHAZAM" a clear reference to it.

Por último algo que quizás solo vea yo pero... ¿no os parece que podrían haber utilizado a Rick como a Phil Coulson en las películas de Marvel? Prácticamente cumplen la misma función y hubiera sido un bonito homenaje a este personaje. Finally something that well, maybe I'm the only one who sees it but ... Do you think they might have used Rick as Phil Coulson in the Marvel movies? They have the same function and it would have been a nice tribute to this character.
